Crescent is a project exploring the importance a mobile phone has in communicating, connecting and finding others. Today’s society is one where we are increasingly closer in space and time through technology. Yet, people feel that technology removes humanity and the attentiveness of reality and fundamentally, it changes the primary mode we communicate in – written text instead of speech and body language. We are aiming to re-establish the face to face communication for people, through the basic interactions such as locating, observing, and walking. The user is given no stimuli other than their phone, and their phone is only used to trigger sequences in the space – it does not provide them direction.
We hope that by using a common object – a mobile phone – in a novel way that prohibits the user from using it to navigate the space regularly, they can examine themselves how they use their technology.

The Chinese name of this installation is “镜花水月” which means the flower in the mirror and the moon in the water. Ancient Chinese people believed the moon represents ”reunion" . The phase of the moon symbolized the destiny that ties people together.
During our final adjustment phase of this project, we tested the connection between iBeacon and the corresponding mobile devices. After several times of walkthroughs, we measured out the ideal distance between each iBeacon and adjusted the animation movement in Unity.
